How To Maintain uPVC Doors

UPVC doors are popular for a reason: combining a stylish aesthetic with excellent thermal performance. Best of all, you won’t have the maintenance worries of a solid wood door.  

That’s not to say that you won’t need to put some effort into uPVC door maintenance. With periodic TLC, you’ll minimise wear and tear for a longer lifespan. 

Tips for day-to-day uPVC door maintenance

Mistreating your doors can damage locks and hinges. You could also dislodge any glazed door panes, compromising their insulation. If your door no longer closes without force, consider oiling the hinges or adjusting the door.

How to Clean and Maintain uPVC Doors

Fortunately, uPVC doors have extremely low maintenance requirements. And with a few simple tools, you can keep them looking their best with minimal effort.  

You will need: 

• Proprietary or homemade cleaning solution 
• A soft sponge

• A dry microfibre cloth and paper towel — avoid anything that might be abrasive
• Silicon or PTFE lubricant for locks and hinges
• Talcum powder for your gasket seals
• A spray bottle for your cleaning solution. 

So, how can you make a homemade cleaning solution? Simply mix two parts white vinegar with one part warm water and add a squeeze of dishwashing liquid. 

Cleaning Your uPVC doors 

For best results, clean your uPVC doors and windows every two months. Follow these quick and easy steps for sparkling, well-kept doors. 

1. First, vacuum away any dirt and grit from nooks and crannies in your door. Try to avoid using the plastic part of your vacuum cleaner as this can leas to scratches and chips. Use a soft brush attachment instead.  You may also need to wipe away any dust with a non-abrasive cloth. 

2. Spray your cleaning fluid all over the door, starting at the top and working towards the bottom. Use a soft sponge to work the liquid into any stubborn stains. Remember to clean the frame as well as the door leaf. Your cleaning solution is also suitable for any glazed panels. 

For stubborn stains, soak the door with the cleaning solution for a few minutes and then use your cloth to wipe away any marks. 

3. If your cleaning fluid produces plenty of suds, rinse the door with clean water before drying. 

4. Finally, wipe the surface dry with a microfibre cloth. 

Top tip: Avoid using polish on your uPVC doors. These products can cause discolouration or damage to the uPVC. 

Looking After Locks and Hardware 

It’s also important to oil your uPVC door’s locking strips and hinges every six months to prevent them from sticking. Here’s how:

1. Remove all dust, grit and grime with a cloth or vacuum cleaner. Then rinse with clean water. 
2. Open the door and rotate the handle to align all the working parts. 

3. Use a spray silicone lubricant to oil the locks and keyholes. Work the mechanism a couple of times to ensure they’re well lubricated. 

4. Use the same lubricant for the hinges. Then, open and close the door a few times to work the oil into the mechanism. 

5. Avoid oiling the mechanism of sliding patio doors, as this could cause a malfunction. 

Top tip: Don’t be tempted to use traditional ‘sticky’ oils like WD40. These products can damage uPVC or accumulate in your locks, preventing them from functioning smoothly.  

Caring For Gaskets 

Door seals or gaskets can harbour mould and bacteria. Ensure you clean and inspect them every time you wash your door. 

1. Vacuum the gaskets to ensure that all specks of dust and grit have been removed. Pay particular attention to the corners where dirt can build up. Be gentle so you don’t tear the material. 

2. Use your water-based cleaning solution to wipe down the gaskets. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the uPVC seals. Dry with a similarly coloured cloth so you don’t leave any marks. 

3. Dust the gaskets with talcum or baby powder to prevent sticking. 

Top tip: Always inspect your gaskets during uPVC door maintenance. Check for any gaps, cracks or wear and tear. If you spot any damage, change the door seals immediately.

With good care, your uPVC doors can be a strong and long-lasting addition to your home. There are, however, a few additional maintenance tips to consider.
