Charcoal Vs. Gas Barbecues: Which Is The Best Option For You?

As summer circles ever nearer, it is important to get ready for the predictable garden parties. It is almost taken for granted that when you host a garden party this morning you will be expected to barbecue. If you do not have one or need a new one it can be daunting with so many models out there. Typically, there are only two choices in models, gas vs. charcoal

Below is a condensed list to help you make an informed decision when getting a barbie for this summer.

Benefits of Gas Barbecues

Gas barbecues are notoriously quicker than charcoal, you can often be cooking on them in under ten minutes from switching them on. The speed means you can cook for larger groups more efficiently. With a decent model, you can also set the temperature allowing for a more consistent cooking process.

However, they do lack the blanket of heat that you can get from a charcoal barbecue – unless the lid is firmly shut. Heat retention can therefore be an issue. There are also limits for indirect cooking methods such as smoking. Gas BBQs also tend to be far sturdier and therefore more difficult to move around.

Benefits of Charcoal Barbecues

Getting a charcoal barbecue going can be an issue unless you use a catalyst such as firelighters or starter fluid. They can take up to thirty minutes to be ready. They do give off a consistent radiant heat allowing you to sear foods and slow cook too. They are also good for indirect cooking and smoking thanks to said radiant heat.

Although, heat control can be difficult as with any live fire, but with practice, you will get the hang of it. Charcoal itself also does not actually provide the smokiness if that is what you are looking for you can simply add some wood chippings. Finally, charcoal barbecues tend to be smaller than their gas counterparts although this does mean you aren’t restricted to one area as they have more transportability.

There’s More To A BBQ Than Just The Cooking Apparatus

Barbecue choice is secondary only to seating as your guests will need somewhere to relax and have a drink whilst you cook for them. They may also need somewhere to take shelter when the weather inevitably turns. Why not consider gazebo side panels? Specialised Canvas offers fully customisable made to measure panels to add to any existing structure you may have in your garden.

It is worth thinking about as having something like that in your garden means your guests are more likely to stay in your garden localising any clean-up.

The Verdict

It does all come down to preference and priority. If you are eager to learn the intricacies of charcoal grilling, then go for one of them and truly embrace the craft there are lots of recipes unique to charcoal grilling that you could practice and master. Or if you just want to cook for your friends at a summer barbecue doing the standard burgers and hot dogs, things that do not require too much planning or finesse then go for a decent gas grill that will last you.
