Go Navy! (We’re Not Talking Football or Military)

Be On Trend for 2020 With 8 Utterly Perfect Deep Blue Paint Shades

Sherwin-Williams recently revealed their 2020 Color of the Year, and it’s a gorgeous navy hue called—appropriately—Naval. The popular paint company says their signature 2020 color “fuses the striking and bold opulence of Art Deco with the aweinspiring power of nature – from the infinite night sky to the mysterious depths of the sea.” If that sounds like a lot of symbolism packed into one little paint chip, don’t worry. You can love Naval—and any other great navy paint color—for any reason you want! In fact, let’s take a look at a few other great navy colors that have stood the test of time and impressed designers in the know!

Get to Know These 8 Great Shades

Hague Blue 30 – Farrow and Ball

Hague Blue is dark as an antique night, and it’s been a designer favorite for years. It takes its inspiration from the deeply colored woodwork used by the Dutch. With moody gray and green undertones, this classic dark hue looks terrific in traditional, Craftsman, and rustic homes.

Drawing Room Blue – Farrow and Ball

Rich, deep, warmer than Hague Blue, Drawing Room Blue looks soft and velvety on the walls. This color can look like a charcoal gray in some lights, and it’s perfect for a cozy den or library.

Hale Navy – Benjamin Moore

Hale Navy is equal parts sophisticated and fun. This deeply saturated paint color is great for masculine bedrooms, dining rooms, and other interior spaces where you want a really intense blue.

Blue Note – Benjamin Moore

Blue Note is another navy with gray and green undertones that reads romantic and bold at the same time. Great for an accent wall or dramatic dining room, this paint glows with a lovely warmth.

Blue Muscari – Benjamin Moore

Named after the grape blue flowers of spring, this shade is vibrant and brighter than a true navy. It can be terrific in the right space, but it will command attention wherever its used.

Inkwell – Sherwin-Williams

Inkwell is so dark you may find it on a list of great black shades, but it does have deep blue undertones that make it reads navy in natural sunlight. This shade is less vibrant than a true blue, but less harsh than a true black.

Brigand – C2

C2 is an ultra premium paint line that offers saturated and stylish colors. Brigand is one of the darkest navy paints. C2’s mysterious shade looks absolutely fabulous in a high gloss or lacquer.

Club Navy – Ralph Lauren

It’s no surprise that Ralph Lauren’s iconic navy is the most nautical and preppy shade on our list. This color is right at home in seaside bedrooms, classic foyers, and dining rooms everywhere.

Classic? Trendy? Navy Paint is Both

Whichever navy hue you choose, you can’t go wrong with this classic trend that’s fresh again. Depending on the context, it can be dramatic and bold, understated and classic, or romantic  and moody. From coastal homes to urban city lofts and everywhere in between, navy can be a great choice when you want to freshen up your home. And don’t be afraid to use it in unexpected places. Libraries, drawing rooms, dens, and dining rooms may be classic spots for this deep shade, but navy can be great as a bathroom accent wall, a sophisticated playroom space, or even a cabinet shade with shiny brass hardware.

Wherever you put it, make sure you hire a great painter when you decide to go navy. Because the shade is so dark, mistakes and ragged cut lines show up very clearly. Choose an experienced painter with great recommendations and meticulous habits to ensure a gorgeous finish!
