8 Ways To Recycle Your Old Curtains

Curtains are often a long stay feature in a household. Whilst we’ll change the wallpaper or TV every few years, how long have your curtains been up on the wall?

If you’re at the stage where you want to replace your curtains, here are 8 ways to reuse or recycle your old curtains.

  • Give them a clean. It depends on the material, but you could wipe them with a damp cloth, or put them through the washing machine. Alternatively, you could call a professional curtain cleaning service. All being well, cleaning will revitalise colour, remove stains & freshen up the room.
  • Dye them. Your old curtains may not fit in with your new wallpaper or paint. If that’s the case, have you considered dying them? Going from a light to darker colour is relatively easy to achieve. Even supermarkets stock home dye kits!
  • Pet bedding. Curtains are usually of a reasonable thickness and quality, so plump up your pet’s bed or basket. They’ll thank you for it!
  • Decorating cover sheets. Store them away until your next session of DIY and then reuse your old curtains as dust sheets, or carpet covers.
  • Cut them up. Curtains at their very simplest could become rags for dusting or shoe polishing. Alternatively you may want to be more inventive and make cushion covers, or an apron for cooking.
  • Dressing up. Kids love dressing up, so what about reinventing your curtains as a cape or cloak? They’ll be stylish ones too, thanks to your great taste(!)
  • Plant Protectors. During the Winter months, a curtain should provide protection against the frost and cold for your plants. Simply wrap them up and tie with some string.
  • Garage oil catcher. Stick the curtain in the middle of the garage floor, and any leaks your car is suffering from will be caught by the curtains rather than messing up the floor.
