How to Find the Correct Fire Assessor for your Property

All employers are obliged to follow fire safety legislation to ensure absolute safety in the workplace. The current legislation is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 that includes a thorough examination for any potential risk of fire in commercial properties.

This is followed up with a written report of what the assessment revealed and a plan of action to remove or reduce any hazards that are found.

A task with such responsibility needs to be carried out by someone you can rely on and trust, so you can be sure that your property complies with certain fire safety legislation. This is important if your name is down as the duty holder, because if any incidents were to occur you would primarily be responsible, despite someone else having carried out the risk assessment.

So, to ensure that you use a legitimate company as your trusted fire risk assessors, there are a few things you should be aware of to keep an eye out for.

Choosing the Right Fire Safety Company

Firstly, there are 2 main ways a company can present their legal competence when it comes to fire safety:

Firstly make sure they are registered or certified with a professional governing body which meets the criteria set out by the Fire Risk Assessment Competency Council.

Secondly ensure they are certified by a body that is accredited by UKAS, the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) that makes sure any third party bodies are recognised by the government as being legitimate and adhering to the standards set out by the ‘scheme’.

Once this has been established, there are a few other things you could look into to make sure they are a recommended and trustworthy company.

  • Do a bit of research and find out how long the company have been established for. If they’ve been running for a few years then they would have built up wealth of knowledge in the field of work and are more likely to be genuine.
  • Request to see references and recommendations from previous customers they have worked with.
  • You could even get in touch with their previous customers yourself by asking what scheme they are part of. As well as outlining exactly what needs to be assessed in the building, schemes also hold a register of companies that have been assessed by them in order to meet the requirements laid out by the scheme.

Finding the right fire risk assessor like Elite Fire ensures you are not in breach of any current fire legislation, so it’s worth spending the time to find one that’s registered with the appropriate organisations, so you can rest assured knowing that your property is free from any potential fire hazards should a situation arise.
