Guide to Buying new Windows

A window should serve as an investment that pays off for many years and staves off whatever the weather throws at it, but knowing exactly what you need to look for to ensure that you’re getting the best windows for your money can be difficult for most people. Therefore, to get you on the right footing when you go about finding new windows for your home, we’ve put together a guide to lead you through the market and enable you to get the most out of your investment.

The Glass

You may require different types of glass or glazing for your windows depending on your needs. If you live in a warmer place or you’re buying windows for an outhouse, single glazing would be cheaper and an appropriate choice for you, but otherwise we would at least recommend opting for double glazing windows. Double glazing works by sealing a pocket of air between the two sheets of glass that helps deal with heat loss.

If you live in a colder environment, however, it may be best for you to go for triple glazing windows. These windows, as the name suggests, have three layers of glass, but instead of air, the pockets of gas between the sheets is of krypton and argon, helping to better insulate your home.

Furthermore, triple and double glazing helps to quell outside noise pollution and adds extra security to your home that single glazing struggles to provide.

Energy Efficient

Making sure that your windows will provide adequate insulation in your home is absolutely essential for anyone wanting to cut their energy bills. Double glazing can provide more insulation that will keep the heat in during the winter, and the cooler air during the summer. The R-value of a window will also be a key signifier of the energy efficiency of a window; the higher the R-value, the better its insulating properties. U-values denote how well the window conducts non-solar heat that can keep your home warm for less, and the lower this value is the better.

Style

Though this may go without saying, it’s important that you choose windows that fit the general aesthetic of your home, both in the sense that they match the decor of your rooms and the building style of your home. Some suggestions of window style you could opt for include:

  • Bay windows
  • Sliding windows
  • Double-hung windows
  • Casement windows

This list is not exhaustive, however; if you want a more comprehensive list of windows available to you, contact your local supplier today.

Supplier and Installer

It’s no good going for house-altering windows if you’re going to skimp out and settle for anything less than the best. That means finding the best supplier/installer in the area to ensure your investment pays off for years and years to come. Not only will you be getting the best materials, you’ll also be making sure that your new windows are properly installed and will go the distance. It is well worth your time to shop around suppliers to find the best in your area.

Window Coverings

Once you’ve got the windows sorted the final step is to think about window coverings. Whether you’re going for blinds or curtains you want this final detail to be as perfect as the window itself. After all it’d be a shame to invest in such a significant change without thinking about this last detail.  A top tip is to consider made to measure blinds, the style of these should reflect your own personal taste and the windows design. If you’re struggling for ideas with this, you’re best of getting a professional to go through all the options.
